A Season for Nonviolence is a national 64-day educational, media, and grassroots campaign inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It runs from January 30 to April 4.

On January 9, 2007, Long Beach City Council unanimously adopted a motion led by Councilmember Suja Lowenthal to officially recognize and support A Season for Nonviolence (January 30 - April 4), a 64-day campaign dedicated to demonstrating how non-violence can powerfully heal, transform and empower lives and communities.

Apply to Receive a Mini-Grant for Your Season for Nonviolence Projects!
 
Educators, Faith Groups and Youth-Serving Organizations are Invited to Apply.  
The purpose of the Mini-Grant Program is to support the development and implementation of projects that increase awareness of nonviolent principles and practices. The Program also gives grant awardees the opportunity to become part of a community of peace builders, sharing expertise and offering mutual support to one another during A Season for Nonviolence and beyond. Documenting these projects and sharing them with the greater Long Beach community will strengthen our community's collective commitment to nonviolent principles and practices.

A Season for Nonviolence Photography Exhibit 2008

Local photographers of all levels are encouraged to participate in a special photo exhibit in observance of the Season for Nonviolence sponsored by Vice Mayor Bonnie Lowenthal, the City of Long Beach Human Dignity Program, the East Village Association, East Village Arts District, and Zephyr Vegetarian Café. The exhibit will be on display between March 13 and March 30.

5 - Kick Off Ceremony & Student Mural Unveiling
250 students, educators, community members and leaders kicked off the Season for Nonviolence, Long Beach @ Jordan High School on Februrary 5th. A student mural was unveiled (see image below) that was based on original art by Wilson High School students Mitchell Morris & Zachary LaRoque. The mural, which depicts elements of violence, racism and fear being replaced with peace, respect, and unity, will travel throughout the city of Long Beach during the 2008 Season for Nonviolence.

The primary objective of this Forum is to increase global engagement and broaden our understanding of some of the most difficult challenges facing human advancement. This three-day Forum focuses on modern genocides and the global responsibilities we share as world citizens to prevent and eradicate such atrocities from contemporary society.Through the eyes of international experts, genocide survivors, film makers and many others, it is expected that this event will serve as a significant educational tool and resource for CSULB and the Southern California community.All events are open to the public and are free of charge.
